Wild West: 21st-Century Quilts Salute the American Frontier

Theme: Entries must be quilts that relate to the theme of Wild West. Quilters have long used western-themed quilts to show their appreciation for all things western. Cowboys, cowgirls, Native Americans, horses, cows, other animals, rodeos, ranches, farm machinery, ranch hands, the Pony Express, railroads, Old West maps, panning for gold, mining, frontier architecture, square dances, and western movies are only some of the subjects that come to mind when thinking of the Wild West. Any techniques and processes—piecing, appliqué, embroidery, thread painting, photo transfer, printing, whole cloth and/or manipulated fabric, etc. —may be used as long as they are appropriate for the quilt and the theme. We welcome both classic and innovative approaches to quilt making in this competition.

FOCUS: FUNCTION | Excellence in Fibers 2016

Because of the vast response to the first Excellence in Fibers exhibition, we have established a more refined approach for Excellence in Fibers 2016, to better identify the range of the makers and their intent. Therefore, we have established five categories to narrow the entry focus. The final exhibition catalog will be expanded to make a larger publication and include more of the selected works. Prizes will be given in every category. This will allow for a more comprehensive exhibition and increased opportunities for the artists.

There will be a $300 prize for each category, with a $600 Best of Show prize chosen from all entries. This more than doubles the available prizes compared to EIF 2015. In each category, 12 works will be selected. This is twice the number of selected works as EIF 2015.

The function emphasis on EIF 2016 puts the focus on the maker's intentions and can incorporate the vast range of fiber mediums.

LAYERED VOICES

Premiere Location:
International Quilt Study Center & Museum Lincoln, Nebraska
April, 2017

Show Concept:
Layers are everywhere. They become apparent when we plumb the earth's surface, make archeological digs to discover the history of civilizations, explore human anatomy, dress for the weather, dig in freshly fallen snow, and count rings in the stump of a tree. Layers are abstract, too. We find them in language when we ponder the hidden meanings in novels, poems, conversations, and puns.

Stitched: Embracing the Quilt as Art

Deadline to enter: September 30, 2016

All members of SAQA Florida region are invited to apply.

The general public often translates the word quilt to mean bedspread. And they have no idea what an art quilt is. A very special bedspread, maybe? This exhibit will be an opportunity to clear up those misconceptions and to introduce a new audience to the idea of quilts as fine art.

With that in mind, all work will be visually appealing, but will collectively include a wide variety of subjects, abstraction/realism, colors, techniques, messages, and materials.
